My daughter had cancer. Two years ago, when she came home from college between her freshman and sophomore years, she discovered that the breathing problems she was experiencing were caused by something much more nefarious than we thought. Her treatment, her battle, became the singular focus during that summer. And thanks to some very special people at Mayo in Scottsdale, the determined attitude of my daughter, and luck that defies description, she managed to fight it.

My ride that September was inspired by her and dedicated to the team of professionals that helped her.

I'm still inspired by them, but this September, I will ride for her and all the children and families facing similar diagnoses. It's not a fate, however. We can beat this demon if we keep riding and supporting causes like The Great Cycle Challenge. As the sticker on my Niner bike reminds me every time I hop on it, "pedal dammit."
