Meet Kane
5-year-old Kane’s stuffed rhino Ron is his official hospital buddy as he bravely battles leukemia. He loves telling stories about Ron getting up to all sorts of antics.
After 4 days of high fevers, Kane’s parents took him to the emergency room. The heart-breaking news came shortly after…
Kane was diagnosed with B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia on November 27, 2023.
This brave boy was given an urgent blood transfusion due to low counts of platelets and white blood cells. He was then ready to begin chemotherapy treatment, and he spent 25 long days in hospital for that first admission. Kane was discharged a few days before Christmas 2023.
On his cancer journey, some days have been much harder than others. Through everything, Kane remains his happy self and inspires his parents to follow his lead. He is and always has been a fighter.
Kane’s parents have had to closely monitor him at home and call his medical team anytime his fever exceeds 100.4 degrees. They are always alert but also make sure to keep Kane as calm and happy as possible during scary and anxious situations.
He is currently receiving daily oral chemo, which is normally 2 pills a day but can also be up to 10. He also goes into the hospital every 3 months for a lumbar puncture in his spine, as well as chemotherapy through both his spine and port.
Kane is a model patient and basically a professional at this point, making the whole process of clinic and hospital days look easy.
His parents are looking forward to Kane crushing even more milestones in the next year of treatment and they’re praying that there aren’t any big hurdles along the way.
Kane’s mom and dad have balanced each other out as they all navigate this cancer journey together. His mom, Kate, tends to face one day at a time and take things as they come, while Kane’s dad, Nick, is always on the next chapter and researching long-term effects.
By sharing Kane’s story with others, they’re hoping that people will be inspired to support vital childhood cancer research. They told us, “We believe that everyone will be affected by cancer in some way at some point, and we want everyone to have a happy ending to their story.”
In spite of everything he has endured, Kane is bursting with joy and creativity. He has become quite a storyteller of long tales, fiction and non-fiction, inspired by watching the world around him. He also loves to sing songs he’s heard or ones he’s made up. You’ll often find him hanging out with his best puppy pal, Knox the labrador.
His mom told us, “We rarely have a quiet house, but we wouldn’t have it any other way.”
They’ve always loved taking walks together on the trail by their house. Kane now has a stroller to support him when his legs need a break and it has helped tremendously with maintaining an active family lifestyle, while helping him gently rebuild his strength.
Kane, we’re all riding for YOU this September!
